I know very little about the Arnolds (what a surprise, eh?). Our particular people are: Martha, who married Charles Pattee (their daughter Lulu was Dad's grandmother), and her father Daniel J. According to the census, Daniel was born in Virginia, his wife was born in Maryland, so I have looked for Arnolds in Virginia with especial emphasis on ones in counties close to Maryland - without any success so far, alas.
And to add to the confusion, Daniel in 1880 said his parents were born in Kentucky, which makes no sense at all. The handwriting on the census is fairly terrible, and it could be NY???
