The Bateses were English, probably, but before they came to America, they were Irish.
Probably part of the Anglo-Irish crew.
They lived in the Wexford / Wicklow area, more or less within the Pale.
Our ancestor George Bates (Dad’s grandfather’s grandfather) lived and died in Ireland.
His widowed wife and 5 of their 6 known children emigrated in 1832 -
first to Canada (her brother was already there)
and then to New York.
Our great-great-grandmother Sarah, her sister Ann, and brother George went further west.
Sarah married Jeremiah Bothwell.
Their son James A was Dad’s grandfather.
We have no family memories about the Bateses.
But fortunately, James A had a twin sister Jennie
and also older brother Benjamin -
and their descendants kept their memories (and even some documents).
.
Walter Bratney is Jennie Bothwell’s descendant,
Linda Nielsen is Benjamin Bothwell’s descendant -
both of them have been more than generous.
Most of this information comes from them.
James and Jennie had another brother David -
and his descendant, Eileen Murphy, has been a tireless researcher. Most of the information on the Irish Bateses comes from her.
