Kearney got this information from a fellow researcher several years ago:
"As I recall from my conversations with Sarah McKnight (the researcher's 1st cousin once removed), she said most of the Bothwells were clustered in and around the Dromara/Ballynahinch/Downpatrick areas of County Down, though I do recall her saying there were a few Bothwells in Counties Armagh, and Tyrone as well as a few "urban" Bothwells in Belfast."

According to Kearney, at least two of the Bothwells who married into this clan were the children of Alexander Bothwell and Rebecca Duncan from County Fermanagh. They had 9 children; the oldest, James Alexander, was born in 1800 and the youngest about 1820, and all were born in Ireland. The emigrated to Quebec.
I copied this next nice narrative bit from a web-site or discussion list that I can no longer find. It was written by Bonnie Robillard - and she has given me permission to reprint it (private email 13 July 2009)
Jeremiah and Ann Trotter Elliott immigrated from Donegal Ireland (or Fermanagh Co) to Quebec, Canada, around 1836. The Trotter family was said to have come from Armagh. They settled in the primitive Township of Durham, Drummond County, Quebec where they purchased 200 acres of Land. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and biographical histories state, they came from wealthy parents in Northern Ireland. From what we can determine, the Elliotts settled on one side of the St Francis, Saint Francois River, in Ulverton, Kirkdale region, where so many of their graves were located in the United Church Cemetery. The land in this region is very hilly, wooded, and perhaps was farmland somewhat like that of their native Ireland.
Donegal, Province of Ulster, is the most westerly of the three Northern Counties of Ireland. It's climate was described as cold and unhealthy because of the many lakes, marshes and rivers situated therein. The area is mountainous in some sections, but there are many fertile valleys and good land.
Jeremiah made his will on the 10th of February 1854, dying on the 15th day of that same month. The will was not filed in the Courthouse in Drummondville until May 3rd 1871 when it affected some real estate in Durham and it was necessary that it be proven and probated. He willed his sons George and Jeremiah the tract of land on which they lived. It would appear that these sons did not purchase land, but farmed part of the acreage purchased by their father. Jeremiah provided for his wife, Ann, if he preceded her in death. She was to be provided with 200 pounds of flour, 2 pounds of tea and 50 pounds of sugar each year. She was to remain living in that part of the house they occupied and also was to have the use of one cow. Son Trotter, also got the tract of land he lived on, but that the other sons were to have privilege of a road wherever it was convenient for the three of them.
A grandson, Richard, son of Jeremiah and Ann's deceased son Alexander, was bequeathed the tract of land on which they also lived. His mother Ann and the younger children were to be supported from the said land. A provision was also made that if Richard left this land, the next oldest son would be responsible for it and the support of his mother and the younger children. None of their other children were mentioned in the will. His son John, witnessed the will and was the one who signed the recording of the will in 1869. George Hyndman, also witnessed the signing by Jeremiah in 1854, but had moved to Balleyville, Illinois by 1869.
When Jeremiah, the elder, and his family migrated to Canada from Ireland, most of their children also made the trip. Many of them had already married in Ireland and had Children of their own. Rebecca stayed in Ireland. Jeremiah was about 55 or 56 when he left his native land and brought to this side of the world, with him three generations.
