1780/1 - 1856
Virginia - Kentucky - Indiana - Kentucky
Dade was the oldest child of Terrance Connor and Sarah Speake, born about 1780 in Virginia. When he was about 5, the family moved to Washington County, Kentucky; later, when he was about 18, the family moved to Breckinridge County, Kentucky. It seems that Dade might have stayed behind in Washington County for a while after the others moved. In 1800 Dade is on the tax list for Washington Co, KY and Terrance is on the list for Breckinridge.
However that was, Dade did eventually move to Breckinridge, and is mentioned in the court books there several times between 1803 and 1808. He is mostly mentioned for being on a jury (8 times) but once he was fined for being disorderly during a court session (I failed to notice what was going on at the time), twice he was fined for profane swearing, and once he was arrested for being in a fight in which he supposedly took a bite of the other fellow’s ear. This case dragged on for several years, but when it finally came to trial he was acquitted.

1803 Aug 20 - Dade Connor, Terrance Conner, on jury
1803 Nov 22 - Dade Connor on jury

1804 July 16 - Dade Connor on jury
1805 July 17 p. 210 - ordered that Dade Connor pay a fine to the Commonwealth of $2.00 for disturbing the Court by disorderly behavior, plus costs
1805 Oct 23 Grand Jury returned the following presentments:
- Dade Connor, for profane swearing (two counts)
21 Apr 1806 - (p. 265) - defendant did not appear, fined 5 shillings current money (for each count)
1805 Oct 24 - Dade Connor on jury
1806 Apr 23 - Dade Connor on jury
1806 Apr 24 - Dade Connor on another jury
1807 Oct 21
(p. 427) Dade Connor with William Walker, Peter Cummings, Robert Wilson, Aaron Rawlings, Ansel Hyde and Benjamin Huff came into Court and posted bond fo $800.00, conditioned that if said Dade Connor did appear in Court tomorrow to answer an indictment for feloniously biting off a part of the left ear of James Crucheloe, then bond will be void.
(p. 442) Grand Jury returned to Court the following indictments and presentments:
Indictments: - against Dade Connor, for felony
(p. 444) Dade Connor, with William Walker, Aaron Rawlings, Peter Cummings, Torrance Connor, Thomas G. Alvey, and James Thompson, his security, came into Court and acknowledged bond, Dade Connor presenting himself1808 Apr 18 (p. 479-480) Commonwealth v Dade Connor, on indictment. Defendent appeared as bound by recognizance, and on his motions, cause was continued to next term of Court, at costs of Defendant. Defendant appeared with securities William Walker, Peter Cummings, Timothy Cummings, John Thrasher and Thomas G Alvey, binding themselves, $400.00 for Connor and $400.00 on securities, to appear 1st day of next July term of court. p.
1808 Apr 21 (p. 507) Joel Tullis, jailer, is allowed the following . . .
- for putting in jail and release of Dade Connor, a Criminal .41 ½
- for keeping and providing for same in jail 1 day .18
1808 July 18 (p. 516-7) Commonwealth v Dade Connor, on indictment for felony. Said Dade Connor, being bound to appear here in this Court this day, appeared and was set to the bar by the jailor. Pleaded not guilty, asked for jury trial. Jury was called to include Ralph Crume, Sr., Thomas Polk, James Lanman, Ephraim Cummings, William Beard, James Moredock, Micajah Dowel, Leonard Wheatley, Benjamin Pate, Joseph Stith, Robert Owens and Isaac Thomas. Found not guilty and acquitted.
In 1807, his brother Samuel moved across the Ohio River to what would become Perry County, and the rest of the family followed in the next 5 or 6 years.
In 1808 (Feb 23) Dade married Sidney A Huff (called Sadie) in Knox County, Indiana, but according to Cecil Connor, their first child was born in Kentucky (2nd in Indiana, 3rd in Kentucky), so apparently there was some moving back and forth before they settled down. Sadie herself is said to have been born in Breckinridge County, Ky, so perhaps they were one of those Kentucky couples who ran away to Indiana to get married.
Dade and Sadie had 10 or 11 children (that I know of):
Mary Ann (Polly) - 1809 - 16 Jan 1873
m John Jefferson Lang (1806-1873)
They remained in Perry County, and are buried in the Conner Burying Ground.
Lewis T (4 July 1811 - 5 Apr 1895
m Dorothy A Harding (1814 - 1866) - 10 children
m Mary Jane Glenn (1837-1878) - 4 children
They were in Perry County until at least the 1880 census
Sarah (Sally) b ~1814
m Jacob Miller - son Albert
They moved back to Breckinridge before 1860, and Sally was still there (a widow) in 1880
Sidney (Seneath) b ~1817 - 21 Aug 1854
m William Laswell - 6 children
They moved to Crawford County, Ind. After Sidney died, William apparently moved to Spencer Co.
Washington b ~1818 - bef 1856
m Lucina Connor (d/o John & Anna Main) (1822-1878) - 3 children
Benjamin H ~1821 - ~1909
m Jerusha Allen (1824-1899) - 7 children
They lived in Meade County, Kentucky
Lydia b ~1824 - aft 1880
m Curran P Ramsey in Breckinridge Co 1866
They apparently had no children; she was living with sister Sallie in 1880
Charles b ~1828 m Mary McFarland - 9 children
They were in Crawford County until 1880 at least
Dade Franklin b ~1829 - Aug 1853
He apparently never married.
He died in Breckinridge County, KY
Elizabeth 1832 - 25 July 1854
Jane b ~1834
I suspect these last two girls are really one person, who died before Dade’s will in 1856.
In 1815, he finally bought some land in Perry County, but it is not exactly clear to me just where it was. (mentioned in History of Perry County, p. 18 - see if you can figure it out.) In 1817, he was county sheriff and he was there for the 1820 and 1830 censuses.

"Wild animals became scarce soon near Rome, though by going north into the hills all the varieties could be found, including bears. Samuel Connor in releasing his dog from a bear's embrace, received a severe wound from the animal on the knee. Several of the early settlers killed bears, and nearly or quite all killed deer. It is said that Dade Connor killed the last bear about 1844."

from the Helen Voorhees file
Some time after the 1850 census, he moved back to Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He died there on 21 Oct 1856.
