A Brief Outline of the History of the Emigration
1651 Pastorius (Franconia) --> Germantown 12 Oct 1683 - 13 families
1672 Swiss Mennonites fled Zurich --> Alsace
1682-1776 - PA = central point of emigration from Germany, France, Switzerland
1682-1702 - few Germans in Pa, not more than 200 families located mostly at Germantown.
1683-5 - low Dutch, from Cleves (Westphalia)
1702-1727 - 40-50 thousand left Germany
1705 German Reformed in Halberstadt --> Neuweid, Rhenish Prussia-->Holland---> Us1707 NY German Valley, Morrison County, New Jersey - spread
1708 Swiss Mennonites from Alsace to London, then Pa
1708/9 - 33 thousand, at the invitation of Queen Anne, went from Rhine to London - but not taken care of as promised
1708 Kocherethal Lutherans --> Hudson River
fall 1709 - 150 families (650 people) Palatines --> NC (Swiss auspices - from London??)
              100 massacred by Tuscarora 22 Sep 1711
1708/9 - 3600 from England to Limerick
              7000 returned to Germany
           10,000 died - starvation etc
           ~ 1000 to Scillies - never arrived
25 Dec 1709 - 4000 in 10 boats --> NY - 6 MONTH voyage - arr June 1710
            1700 died
             camped out on Governor's Island till fall
             1400 then sent to Livingston on Hudson
            widows, sick, orphans remained - orphans apprenticed by Gov. Hunter to citizens of NY & NJ
            badly treated - expected to pay back $10 K
fall 1712 - 150 families left Livingston - 60 miles to Schoharie - stayed 10 years, then deprived of lands and titles
1723 - 33 families to Tulpehocken - 15 mi w of Reading
               the rest to Mohawk Valley
bef 1746 - more sent by Queen Anne to Virginia - spread
1740-55 - great many Palatines to SC - Orangeburg, Congaree & Wateree
