This line starts with a Hessian soldier, hired by the British to fight against the Americans.
He decided to throw in his lot with the Americans instead.
And the rest is history.
The name in German is apparently Hergloz, and it is apparently the German form of "Hercules." In the early days in this county, it was spelled any number of ways - and some indexers, not as familiar with old orthography, give it even more variants (my all-time favorite is Hartlegs) - so finding people can be a challenge.
I haven't done a lot of work on these people, but here is what I have so far.
Karl Friedrick Hergloz (Charles Harkless) - 1761-1830
