Rebecca Merritt Hudson

1797-1857
North Carolina - Kentucky - Warrick County, Indiana

Rebecca is probably the sister of our Amelia Hudson who married Henry Deweese. There is no definite proof, but there are a number of reasons to support the supposition.
        1. They are of an age to be sisters
        2. They lived in some of the same places at the same time
        3. Amelia's children took refuge with her family when they left Kentucky
        4. Other researchers say so
        5. One researcher says both their marriage licenses listed Susannah Hudson as mother (I haven't confirmed this yet) I think the researcher is Mary Ann Horn - the info was on the Hudson Family GenForum site.

And there is certainly more information out there for her than for poor Amelia. She is given specific birth and death dates - October 6, 1797-November 27, 1857 - rather than the approximations which we have to use for Ameila. [The information comes from: Butler County, Kentucky : a history of Butler County, Kentucky and its people : Butler County, Kentucky history [edited by Lois Russ] Morgantown, Ky. : Butler County Historical and Genealogical Society, 1987.] Her birth place comes from the 1850 census - these are often incorrect, and you should take them with a grain of salt, but in this case we have other reasons for thinking North Carolina is correct (one of them being that the Deweeses also passed through North Carolina).

In 1816, Rebecca married Francis Shrode in Butler County, Kentucky.

(Just to make things nice and confusing, I have another marriage date -5 Dec, 1816 - but I didn't record the source.)
This is the same county, and a few months after, Amelia married Henry Deweese.

Together they had 14 children. I only know the names of 10 of them.

About the names of the children:

I have no proof about the parents of Rebecca and Amelia, but information is floating around on the Internet that they were William and Susannah Hudson. There is some reason to suspect that Susannah's maiden name might have been McDonald - and in light of that, I find the name of Rebecca's first-born son extremely interesting, don't you?

And then there is Ezekiel Perigo Shrode. Ezekiel Perigo married Margaret Hudson in 1822. Margaret does not belong to the Isaac Hudson family of Hudsons, so it is possible she is another sister of Rebecca and Amelia.

Francis Shrode (or Shrodes, or Shroad, etc) was born in about 1787 in Pennsylvania. The Butler County History (noted above) says the date was 25 November 1779 and the place was Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. That is quite a significant difference, and I am wondering if there is not some confusion. The Francis married to Rebecca Hudson was more likely born later - he says he is 62 on the 1850 census. The Butler County history book says Francis died in 1857 also (Francis d. 23 November, Rebecca d. 27 November), but in fact he was still alive for the 1870 census.

I think it is likely that Francis's father's name was Henry. (There is a Henry Shrode in Allegheny County, PA in 1790, and in Butler Co, KY in 1810.)

Sometime between 1816 and 1820, Francis and Rebecca moved to Warrick County. They are there for the 1820 census. (Francis is the only Shrode there that year.)

In 1850, seven of the children were still living with them. Poor Hudson had died in 1849, only 32 years old. (His daugher, Sarah Margaret, would eventually marry Elijah Deweese, son of his - probably - Aunt Amelia.) Son Jacob, like William, was a teacher, boarding with other people, Davis was married and a blacksmith, probably.

All in all, the Shrodes seem to have been pretty prosperous, well-educated people.

Rebecca died on November 27, 1857. I have not found a cemetery listing for her. Many of the Shrodes (and Hudsons) are buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

Francis lived on until at least 1870.
