1798 - between 1850-60
Virginia - Ohio - Missouri - Kansas
. . . is probably identical to “Jehu C Lusk” on the 1820 Tazewell County, Virginia census. (If you look at the microfilm, it seems as though the “u” could actually be an “n” with the humps separated and pointy. And the “e” could be an “o.”) That is the assumption I am going by. [Note - I have heard, from two different people, that Jehu was a nickname for John back in the day, as Jack is now, so.]
I am not sure who John C’s parents are. There have been three suggestions: that he is the son of Samuel and Sarah Bailey Lusk, that he is the son of David and Chloe Bailey Lusk, that he is the son of William and Mary Neely Lusk.
He is pretty consistent in the censuses about how old he is, and the birthdate is 1798.
1. Samuel and Sarah were not married until 1804, so he probably does not belong to them.
2. David and Chloe were together probably from about 1797, so he possibly belongs to them -
Pros: - the census of 1820 - he is closer to David than to the rest of the Lusks.
- John Compton was a neighbor of David Lusk
Cons - timing
Chloe was sued for divorce by David McComas in 1797, and there is no indication that at that time she had any child other than James McComas (who is considered by many to be the 1st son of David Lusk and Chloe, and the whole reason for the divorce). And after the divorce, David and Chloe had another son, Eli/ Elijah, born ~1798 - and other children following in regular succession - so when did she have time to have John C?.
- John Compton sued David & Samuel in 1804.
3. William and Mary Neeley Lusk had two sons (and a daughter too, probably) who went to Ohio - and John C went with them. Later, various groups of them moved on to Missouri. So what we have here is location location location. And these people were friendly with the Comptons (Benjamin, possible nephew of John C, married Anna Compton.)
So my best guess is that he was the son of William and Mary Neely, brother to William and Charles Lusk, and to Mary Polly Lusk Runyan. [And I thank Sandy Jesse for the use of her argument.]
He was born in about 1798. There are no censuses for Virginia for 1800 and no census for Tazewell county in 1810 - and in any case, JC would have been only 12 by then. He first shows up on the records with his marriage to Mary Polly Corder in 1819:
Lusk, Jehu C - Polly Corder 21 Oct 1819 (James Charles)
Tazewell County, Virginia marriages, 1800-1853 / Pauline Haga. (Signal Mountain, TN : Mountain Press, [1991?] )
Mary Polly, born about 1800, was the daughter of Benjamin Corder and Rebecca Runyan.
According to Cheryl Lusk (Lusk Genforum message 1788 - 11 Mar 2008), he and Polly had the following children:
Rebecca (m 1. Daniel Myers 2. William Henry Miller)
Ingram C (m Mary Elizabeth Moore)
Frances (m William Moore, brother to Mary Eliz. above)
Margaret
Sarah (m 1. Unknown - son Thomas; 2. FNU Young - ch Garrett & Mattie; 3. John McGee of Kansas)
Mary
John
Levica
James L (m Nancy Jane Cochran)
Ann (m John W Mansell)
[Actually, Cheryl originally left out Margaret, but she has added her to the list now.]
In 1820, they are on the census for Tazewell County, with possibly a younger sister living with them:
1820 Tazewell p. 251 (848) - Jehu Lusk 000100 011

1f 10-16 b. 1804-1810 ? sister?

There was a John D Lusk on the Personal Property tax list for Tazewell in 1820. Possibly it was this fellow, but who knows for sure?
In 1830, still in Tazewell County, he was listed as John C.

Also in 1830 (March), a John C Lusk was present at the estate sale of William Shannon.
In about 1833 the most of the (known) children of William and Mary Neely Lusk moved to Ohio, to Allen (later Auglaize) county . . .

. . . but John C moved to Missouri before the next census. His probable nephew William (son of Charles Lusk and Ann Runyan), a minister, was there for the 1840 census, but then moved back to Ohio. Cheryl Lusk says another son of Charles’s, Isaac Henderson Lusk, also came with JC at this time. Charles himself moved to Missouri slightly later, but I am not sure when - I haven’t found him on the 1840 census. His wife died in the mid-1840s, and in February 1844, in Missouri, Charles married Jane Miller, sister to William Miller who married John C’s daughter Rebecca (he was older than her father). They had a son, Silas CH Lusk, but Charles himself seems to have died before 1850, and young Silas seems to have been raised by his grandfather Miller.

[William’s children here were Lucina b ~1838 and John E b ~1839]
In the 1840s many of JC’s children got married:
Lusk, Minerva - Pippin, Samuel 21 Oct 1841
this actually is not JC’s daughter, but his niece, d/o Charles (according to Cheryl Lusk, who has done a lot of research on this family)
Lusk, Rebecca - Myers, Daniel 25 Dec 1841
Lusk, Charles - Miller, Jane 29 Feb 1844
this is his probable brother Charles
Mayers, Rebecca - Miller, William 21 Feb 1847
this is daughter Rebecca’s 2nd marriage
Lusk, Eliza - Monroe, Marquis 16 Mar 1848
I am not certain this is his daughter, but there is room for another female on the 1830 & 1840 censuses. Cheryl thinks she is/was the wife of Isaac Henderson Lusk - and the more I think about it, the more I think she’s right.

Eliza
I thought this woman might be a daughter of JC because most of the people getting married in the 1840s in Benton Co were JC’s children. Cheryl Lusk, who has done a lot more work on this family than me, thinks she was the wife (widow?) of Isaac Henderson Lusk, one of the sons of Charles - and I think she’s probably right. But none of the people I have found who might be her match what little documentation there is - nor do the ones I've found match each other very well.
