Children of Samuel Lusk and Sarah Bailey

Please excuse me for quoting "Internet sources" so often. Excuse number one is that in the beginning I didn't know enough to keep a record of my sources. Excuse number two is that some of the sources have simply copied from other sources (as I did and still do) - and it is difficult to figure out who the original source was. I did get a lot of information from various GenForum postings, and I did find some things on Rootsweb - both the WorldConnect and the Archives. One person who helped me a lot individually was Barbara Boyce. But responsibility for any mistakes is mine - with enough time and money, I would go to all the county courthouses and look up whatever records survived the inevitable courthouse fire. Maybe someday I will.

Andrew | John | Polly | Elizabeth | Martha | Harrison | Russell | James | Chloe | Lydia | Whitten | Susan | William | Samuel | Emily

1. Andrew - b. 1804-1810 - d. 1842-1850
Internet sources say he is a son.
He is in Greenup County at the same time Samuel Lusk is.
He gets married at about the same time some of Samuel's daughters do.
Sam and Sarah were married in 1804; Andrew was married in 1830. The earliest he could have legitimately been born was late 1804; supposing age of marriage to be 16 at a minimum, the latest he could have been born was 1813 - and earlier would be better. In 1820, Sam listed 3 boys younger than 10 and 3 boys from 10-26, but since Sam married in 1804, the older boys could only have been 10-16, ie born 1804-1810. We know (from the 1850 census) that two of the younger boys were Harrison, Russell; James is not with Sarah (he's a few houses away) on the 1850 census but Internet sources say he is a son and that census census makes his birth to be about 1816, so he is probably the third younger boy. Therefore Andrew must have been one of the older boys, therefore he must have been born 1804-10.
Since Andrew is our direct line, there is a separate section about him.  (to Andrew Lusk Page )

2. John 1804 - ?
Internet sources say he is a son.
James Carver says he was born 1806. However James Carver also says that Sam and Sarah only had 3 children before the War of 1812, and that these children were John, Polly and Martha. That leaves my Andrew out of the picture. However, James Carver is the descendant of Polly, and often the older children preserve more memories than the younger ones do - so maybe he is right.
At any rate, John is presumably one of the older boys in the 1820 census - but from then on I can find no trace of him.
           Unless he is Andrew John.???
There are 17 John Lusks in the 1830 census index at Ancestry.com, 1 Lush, and 2 Lusts.
                 Alabama, Jackson 80
                 Illinois, Madison 185 (John T)
                 Indiana, Decatur 39

                 Tennessee, Smith 41
                                  Sullivan 13 (John L)
                                  Lincoln 73 (Lust)
You will notice that there are no Virginia Lusks although there was a John C Lusk in Tazewell County for that year. That is the fun of these indexes - you can never be sure they have included everything!
Another possibility is that he may be the son of David and Chloe - John C (Jehu C) Lusk.
A third possibility is that he is related to the Auglaize Co. Lusks.

"Concerning "Jehu" Lusk: There is some evidence that Jehu might have been John C. Lusk, a younger brother of Charles & William Lusk. There was a John C. Lusk who married a Polly Corder on Oct 21, 1819 in Tazewell, VA moved to Augliaze county, Ohio with the family, and then moved to Missouri with his brother Charles. Charles F. Lusk, of Lima, Ohio, found land records in Warsaw, Benton county, Missouri which would be a good person to contact." (signed) Barbara - but I don't know Barbara-who or where I got this. : - ( (maybe Barbara Boyce?)
Another support for the Auglaize thesis is that there are Corders in Auglaize County as well as Lusks and Runyons.

Here are the records I do have about John Lusk, whoever he is:
names assigned to children on pre-1850 censuses assume the Tazewell John is identical with the Missouri John - this is just an assumption
John Lusk married Polly Corder on 21 Oct 1819 in Tazewell Co., VA.

3. Polly 1808 - 1871
Her marriage license says she was a Lusk; Internet sources says she was a daughter of Sam and Sarah. She lives near the rest of the family in Carter County in 1850. James Carver, who is her descendant, calls her Polly (Elizabeth). At any rate, she is one of the girls with Samuel in 1820.
In 1824, she married Isaac Adkins. He was the son of Isaac Adkins and Elizabeth Hager, and lived in Tazewell County, not far from the Lusks.

Daughter Elizabeth married Jonathan Gallien or Gallion in 1843.
In 1850, they are in Carter County, Kentucky, living in the same neighborhood as her mother and most of her siblings.

I had assumed that Wicier was a misspelling for Whitten, but Internet sources (hah, I wrote it down this time: William A Brobst, curator of the Hager Family Historical Register"The Other Hagers of Hagerstown, MD" - posted on Rootsweb) say he is Wiser Carnilues, born 10 March 1840, Shanty Branch, Williams Creek, Carter County, Kentucky.
William Brobst also gives more information about a couple of the children:
        Elizabeth b. 19 Nov 1825 d. ~1904, buried Webbsville, Elliott Co, Ky
married 5 Oct 1843 Floyd Co, Ky Jonathan Gallion (b. 25 Oct 1822)
Eliza b. ~1827, Tazewell Co, Va (a different person than Elizabeth?)
Sarah b. ~1830, Tazewell Co, Va
David b. ~1835, Carter Co, Ky (would this be Daniel in the census?)
Henry b. ~1837, Carter Co, Ky
Wiser Carnilues b. 10 Mar 1840 Carter Co, Ky d. 22 Oct 1915, Carter Co, Ky
married 17 March 1859 Randolph Co, GA (or Randolph Co, Ark) Margaret Jane Williams
OR married 15 March 1860 Randolph Co, GA - which seems more likely, since she isn't with him in the 1860 census
Harrison b. ~1843 Carter Co, Ky
Andrew b. ~1845 Carter Co, Ky
Martha b. ~1848 Carter Co, Ky
William b. ~1848 Carter Co, Ky
Anthony b. ~1849 Carter Co, Ky

Because I couldn't find Isaac and  Polly in the censuses after this, I thought they might have died between 1850 and 1860. Actually, this is wrong. There is a fair amount about Polly's son Wiser on the Internet, and it includes the information that Polly Lusk Adkins died in 1871. (Here is the link.)  I haven't found them in censuses after that date, and I have found their children.

              Sarah 26 / Harrison 16 / Andrew 14 / William 11 / Wiser Adkins 20 m laborer - all Ky

(There is an Isaac Adkins age 53, born Va, in Arkansas in 1860 - but the names of thechildren are all wrong - it is Randolph County, Roanoke 375 - Blacks Ferry. The children are: Alexander 33 b. Oh, Catherine 10, John 9, Elender 7, Isaac 2, Henry T? 1 - all born in Arkansas. I suppose it is possible that Isaac and Polly separated and that Isaac started a second family with another wife.Or Polly might simply have been left off this census for some reason. But she was pretty old to be having children in 1859 - she would have been about 51.)

The older girls are in Kentucky:
      1860 Kentucky Carter Star Furnace 242 (p. 98) - 17 July - line 11 (715-637)

                  Sarah 5f

In 1870, there is a Martha Adkins, about the age of Polly, living with Polly's brothers Russell and Samuel. She is really too old to be their niece, so I wonder if it is another census mistake?

Polly's sons Wiser and possibly Harrison are in Boyd County, Kentucky in 1870:

            173-147 Adkins Wain 29 Ky

          176-150 Adkins, H 24 or 25 (sic) Ky cannot read/write
Sarah 35 Ky / William 22 Ky also cannot read write
(H Adkins is right next to Harrison Lusk, and Wain - which is probably Wiser - is nearby)

In 1871, Wiser and his family were moving back to Arkansas. It was on this journey that Polly Lusk Adkins died.

According to Anna Adkins Kelly's Family History (1951), their (Wiser's and Margaret's) 5th child, James B, was born in Indiana as they were passing through in a wagon train - going back to Missouri & Arkansas. She also says that mother Polly Lusk Adkins was with them, along with sister Sarah - who lived with them most of their lives (she never married) - and Margaret's sister Letitia known as Tish, who also lived with them for many years.
She says that Polly died on the journey, and that Wiser "had to drive on until he came to a farmhouse where he went in and told his story about his mother. The farmer was very friendly and invited him to bring his family in, but he had his own food and bedding in the wagons. The good farmer took the ceiling down from his kitchen to make a coffin. In those days the ceiling and floors of their houses were built from logs that had been split in half, and much work had to be done to fashion a coffin from this type of lumber. The floors built from such logs were know as "puncheon floors." Anna Adkins Kelly states that grandmother, who is Polly Lusk Adkins, was buried and left behind on the farm. The location where they buried her is unknown."
from the link about Wiser (same as above)

Wiser and family are back in Carter County in 1880:
      1880 Kentucky Carter Precinct 8, p 602d (LDS site)
Wiser Adkins 40 carpenter Ky Va Va
Margaret J 38 keeping house GA GA GA

Harrison Adkins 35 Ky Va Va coal mine
                     Nancy A 31

And that is all I know about Polly.

Her son Wiser was an interesting fellow. He became an Indian scout at age 16 (like his grandfather and great-grandfather), and for four years wandered all over the country, even as far as California. It must have been on one of those journeys that he met his future wife, Margaret Jane Williams, a Georgia girl. She was 17 when she married him, and, having been a school-teacher before she married, she taught him to read and write. They seem to have spent their married life alternating between Arkansas/Missouri and Kentucky, finally settling in Kentucky for good sometime between 1884-1897. There is a picture of him in the "Carter County, Kentucky, Photo Album" - link
The phot album also contains a picture of the two-story house he built in 1897 from ONE tulip poplar tree - link

4. Elizabeth 1809/1810 - ?
I have no information about her other than the name and date, which I got from the Internet. James Carver, direct descendant of Polly Lusk and Isaac Adkins, says Polly was actually Elizabeth-called-Polly. I am willing to take his word for it.

5. Martha 1811 - ?
Marriage license says she was a Lusk AND a daughter of Samuel.
Internet sources say she was born 1811.
She is presumably with Samuel for the 1820 census. She seems to be missing from the 1830 census.
        She married in 1831:
14 Mar 1831 Lusk Martha - Robert Gorman - dau Samuel
Hardiman, Richard. Kentucky, Greenup County marriages, 1803-1853 : alphabetized by brides. ([S.l.] : R. and L. Hardiman, 1980.])
He was (according to Darrell Warner, message 1 - 23 Nov 1997 - on the Gorman GenForum site) the son of William Gorman and Jane Henderson.
After her marriage, I can't find her in the census. There are Gormans in Eastern Kentucky, but no Roberts. Darrell Warner says they had a son, also called Robert, born 26 December 1836, died November 11, 1905, who married his 2nd cousin Julia Ann Enix in 1887 (December 19).
And that is all I know about Martha.

6. Harrison 18 Feb 1813 - 15 Feb 1897
Internet sources say he is a son and give his dates.
He lives in close proximity to the rest of the Lusk family (when he can be found).
He is presumably on the 1820 and 1830 censuses with Samuel. He is possibly not with Samuel in 1840, and I have not found him in the 1850 census. (He is possibly the Henry Lusk listed in the 1839 Carter County tax lists.)
He married Nancy Matilda Hall on 19 March 1858, although they had already had 7 children by then - no-one is sure of the reason for the delay. She was the daughter of John Hall and Senia Watson; her sister Elizabeth married James Lusk and her brother Andrew married Emily Lusk, her probable brother James married Susan Lusk. Nancy had been married before, to Henry Dawson, and had at least two children by him (Mary Rose and William C, who appear in the 1860 census as Lusks, but what of that.)

Rae Goodrow is another descendant, and she has a nice website (link)
I have more information of the children and grandchildren of Harrison here.

7. Russell 1815 - aft 1870
Internet sources say he is a son.
He is on the 1850 census with the widowed Sarah Lusk - age 25, which would give him a birthdate of 1825 - but in later censuses he gains a good 7 years, so that makes him born in about 1818 or 1819.
He is presumably one of the males in the 1820, 1830, 1840 censuses with Samuel. He is on the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses in Carter County. He apparently never became a miner (his occupation is given as laborer, farmhand, farmer), and he apparently never married. I haven't found him after the 1870 census.

8. James 1817 - aft 1850
Internet sources list him as a son. He lived near the other Lusks in 1850.
He is possibly the James Lusk listed on the 1839 Carter County tax list.
His age on the 1850 census was 34, which gives him a birth year of 1816.
Internet sources say he married Elizabeth Hall on June 27, 1842. She was the sister of Nancy Matilda Hall (who married Harrison Lusk), Andrew Hall (who married Emily Lusk) and possibly James Hall (who married Susan Lusk); they were the children of John Hall and Senia Watson.
I have not found James after 1850.

9.Chloe 1819 - aft 1850
Her marriage license says she is a Lusk.
She was living at the time in Greenup County, where Samuel and family were located.
Internet sources say she was a daughter, and her name is a good indication that she was (Sarah Bailey Lusk's sister was named Chloe).
Also, she is living near the rest of them in 1850. Her age in 1850 is given as 31, which makes a birth year of 1819; some sources make her a little older (b. 1815).
She is presumably one of the females on the 1820 and 1830 censuses with Samuel.
She married in 1833, in Greenup County:
20 Nov 1833 Lusk Chloe - Claiborne Smith.

Claybourne Smith is on the 1839 tax list for Carter County.

10. Lydia 1820
Internet sources make her a daughter, and give her birth year as either 1820 or 1822.
She was presumably with Samuel for the 1820 and 1830 censuses. She may have been with him for the 1840 census, or she may have been with her brother Andrew. I haven't found her after that.
In 1850, there is a Lydia living near the rest of the Lusks and Halls in Carter County.
             1850 Kentucky, Carter p. 226a 147-147
                  William Smith 29 Pa
                   Lydia 23 Ky
                   John 10/12
This Lydia is a little young to be our Lydia, but it is something to think about, especially considering how the Lusks made a habit of marrying siblings and sister Chloe was married to a Smith. (But Claibourne Smith was supposedly born in Ky and this Smith was born in Pa.)
Other than that, I have nothing on Lydia.

11. Whitten 1821 - aft 1860
Internet sources say he is a son.
James Carver says he was born in 1821; 1860 census says he was born 1824. I have seen him given a birthdate of 1805.
If he was one of the older sons, he is possibly missing in 1830; if one of the younger, he is presumably one of the 3m 10-15 on that census.
He is missing from the 1840 and 1850 censuses.
In 1860, he is with his sister Susan and her husband James Hall, occupation given as"ore digger." Brother Russell is also living with Susan.
         1860 Carter 12 July p. 232
              652-574 James Hall 38 m farmer Ky

And that is all I know about Whitten.

12.Susan - March 22, 1825 - aft 1880
Internet sources say she is a daughter and give her birthdate.
She lives near the rest of the Lusks in Carter County in 1850, and in 1860 has two of the Lusk sons (her brothers) living with her.
She is presumably one of the girls with Samuel in the 1830 and 1840 censuses.
In 1843 she married James Hall, said by some Internet sources to be another son of John Hall and Senia Watson.

13.William 1826 - aft 1850
Internet sources say he is a son.
He is on the 1850 census with Sarah. Age then 24, giving him a birth year of 1826 (some sources say 1823).
He is presumably with Samuel for the 1830 and 1840 censuses.

Some sources say he died in 1850. I have nothing else on him.

14.Samuel 1828 - aft 1870
Internet sources say he is a son, and he is with Sarah in 1850 and with Russell in 1870.
Census ages give him birth years of 1828 and 1830.
He is presumably with Samuel for the 1830 and 1840 censuses (in which case he probably was not born in 1830).
He worked as a miner, for at least part of his life. He apparently did not marry.

15. Emily 1830 - aft 1860

She is with him in 1860 and 1880 - I haven't found them in 1870:
