Jonathan Owen

Some of this information comes from Hook's article, some from various Rootsweb files

Jonathan Owen
      Born: ~1696
In: Southold, Suffolk (Long Island), NY
Died: 1796 (according to the Rootsweb files of Deb Ferguson and Bob Wilhelm
                               - but I can't help wondering about this - 100 yrs old?)
      In: Mt Joy, Orange, NY
I am not clear about the exact location of Mt. Joy, but Ebenezer Owen, s/o Jonathan and Mary Brewster Owen was said to have lived there.

               Father: John Owen
               Mother: Mary Unknown
                      Siblings: none known

One of the record sheets Una Bowman looked at (I assume these are DAR sheets) had the Jonathan who married Bethia Terry born 1696 in Wales, son of John Owen and Mary Brewster - which confuses things nicely, no?  It also said that Jonathan was killed by Indians at Wallkill.  The only Owen killed by Indians at Wallkill that Una has found was Morgan Owen:

26 March 1756. Deposition. Charles Clinton, of Little Britain, Ulster county, giving an account of the services of Captains Borlean and Newkirk’s companies, on the alarms of the Indians: number killed; Philip Swartwout’s house at Minisink burned, and five men and a woman killed; Morgan Owen, on the Wallkill, killed; Silas Hulst’s house robbed; de-stressed contition of the inhabitants.
           Calendar of Historical Manuscripts, v 2, 1664-1776 . . . from English Manuscripts, Vol LXXXII, p. 99

Hook, by the way, says the Jonathan, son of Jonathan and Mary Brewster, was NOT the same as this fellow - because (a) Jonathan married Bethia Terry at Southold rather than Brookhaven (although the son of Jonathan and Mary Brewster married his 2nd wife at Southold -?), and (b) Jonathan s/o Jonathan and Mary B was in Connecticut at the time Jonathan-married-to-Bethia was in Orange County. Hook has that Jonathan b ~1690, Brookhaven - d 1759 - m (bef 1703) Mary Unknown (bef 1689 CT - bef 1718 CT) doesn't this seem a little young - Jonathan 13??? and m 2 (1718 Southold, Suffolk, NY) Rachel Woodworth. For the rest of Hook's notes on the other Jonathan, see his section.

     Married: (1) (23 Oct 1723) Bethia Terry
                             she was b ~1703, d/o Gershom Terry (probably) of Southold - d before 1752?
(and the Terrys are a pretty tangled genealogical web also, so that is only a guess)
                                 Children:
                                           Gershom 1724 - 1779-92 - moved to Orange County
                                                m Hannah Knapp - 7 children
                                           Nathaniel ~1727 - ~1806
                                                m three times possibly - 9 children
                                           John ~1729
                                               m (15 Jan 1761) Elizabeth Crandall
(according to Deb and Bob; Hook lists this as a possibility)
                                           Joshua 1730 - 21 Oct 1819
m Sarah Oustrom - 12 children (according to Deb and Bob; Hook lists only 3)
m (2) Mary Dains (according to Deb Ferguson, Bob Wilhelm and others at Rootsweb)
The Salmon Records (in Long Island Source Records, selected by Henry B. Hoff [Baltimore : Genealogical Pub. Co., 1987.]) have a marriage between Jonathan Owen and Mary Dains on 17 Sept 1755. It is possible that the record refers to this Jonathan - although Jonathan had most likely moved to Orange County by 1738, he could have gone back to Long Island for a new bride. I have trouble with the children listed for them, however.
                                 Children:
                                          Abigail - ~1752
                                               m (2 Feb 1784 - 1st Presbyterian, Goshen) Abiel Frye - son Charles Frederick
These next daughters have the exact names as Gershom's daughters????
                                         Mary - ~1753
                                         Bethia/Tabithy - ~1754
                                         Hannah - ~1756
                                         Margaret - ~1758
                                         Sarah/Sally - ~1759

Notes from Hook:
He is listed by Hook as "probably" son of John, son of George.
"married at Southold, Long Island, 23 Oct 1723, Bethia Terry, daughter probably of Gershom Terry of Southold.
Jonathan and Bethia probably removed to Orange County, NY, where he probably was the Jonathan Owen listed as a militiaman in 1738 in the Wallkill, Orange Co, NY, 1st Company of the Precinct of Highlands commanded by Capt. Thomas Ellison [Report of the State Historian of NY, Colonial Series, 1:614]
Probable children, with perhaps others unidentified:
            Gershom / Nathaniel / John / Joshua
