Most of the Pattees in this country can be traced back to Peter Pattee, a shoemaker who arrived in Massachusetts in about 1675.
Naturally of course our particular Pattees seem to have gotten disconnected from the rest of the well-documented tribe.
We have Dad’s Grandma Lulu Pattee, born 1879 in Nebraska.
Her father was Charles Pattee, born . . .1852 or 1854
in . . . Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan or New York.
We think Charles’s father was Wellington Pattee, who lived (for a while) in Stephenson County, Illinois, which is right by the Wisconsin border.
And Wellington’s father was Day Emerson Pattee (who started out in New York),
and he connects all the way back to Peter.
But the Charles-Wellington connection isn't as strong as it could be.
Grandma Lulu married Charles Scott, and then when he died she married Winthrop Pattee.
Winthrop was the son of Jason, who was the son of Day Emerson, so Lulu and Wint were 1st cousins once removed. Possibly.
Ain’t genealogy grand.
Pattee is a nice uncommon name so you would think the research would be a snap.
Unfortunately, there have been more variants than you can shake a stick at.
All the various combinations of single or double letters, all the various possibilities involving “ie” and “er” and "en" and even “it” (think French pronunciation).
It has even been found as Pete or Peat and often as Petty.
Fortunately, there are some wonderful cousins out there who have a lot of knowledge and a willingness to help. Chief among them is Steve Pattee, a true friend in need.
Anyone interested in the Pattees will eventually find the wonderful article by Marie Scalisi and Virginia Ryan:
“Peter Pattee of Haverhill, Massachusetts: A ‘Journeyman Shoemaker’ and His Descendants”
published in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register in three parts appearing in October 1992, January and April1993.
The information on everyone down to Jerediah is basically a precis of this article, and you might prefer to get the original, to benefit from all her notes.
(Because of this, I thought of leaving out the early people, but this is done for my cousins, who don't have access to a good library, so.)
