*Sarah's mother-in-law was one of the most famous women in the country for a while - and the first woman to have a monument erected in her honor.
In 1697, there was an Indian attack upon the western part of the town of Haverhill - half a dozen houses were burned and 39 people were killed or captured.  Among those captured were Hannah, who had recently given birth to her 8th child, and the nurse who was helping her.  The baby was killed by the Indians, and so were several of the other captives, but Hannah and the nurse, Mary Neff, survived.  They and a young boy, captured in an earlier raid, escaped - after killing 10 of the 12 Indians in the household to which they were consigned.  They even remembered to bring back the Indians' scalps as proof.
Historians seem a little uncomfortable with the part played by Hannah's husband Thomas in this affair.  He saved the seven older children - they almost certainly would not have escaped without his protection - but some accounts protest a bit much about how she begged him to leave her and take care of the others.  As we say these days, it is what it is.
