They seem to have been fairly substantial people.
Estella May Roberts married James Augustus Bothwell.
Her father was James M Roberts.
His father was Obediah Roberts.
His father was most likely Jesse S Roberts.
After that it gets tricky.
The person who helped me most with this family was Maxine Lacy - she was most generous with her time and documents, and she was a terrific researcher (she died in 2004). Mary Matthews is another tireless researcher, who has also been extremely generous and helpful. And Ken Roberts has recently provided some important documentation.
My assumption is that Obediah's father was Jesse Roberts, who was born in South Carolina. But when and how the Robertses arrived in South Carolina is still unknown.
