--- now we are approaching the place where Crawford Sams is not much
help, and is, in fact, wrong in many many places. Crawford (SFOV p. 55)
says Wiley was never in Union Co, but went directly to Hickman County
between 1820-40. And Wiley is one of the first Sams on the Hickman tax
lists (1825 - William is also on it for that date).
HOWEVER - there is a story from the Sams GenForum site, which says that
Wiley married Lavina Jeffrey 16 Jan 1816 in Illinois
moved to Arkansas (Lawrence Co) in 1817
deserted pregnant wife and went back to Illinois - date uncertain
son Jehoida J Sams b. 1818 near Reed's Creek, Lawrence Co,
Ark
"Jehoida Sams married Sarah Scott, they lived in Izard Co., Arkansas. Jehoida was a Judge in Izard Co.; his parents separated before his birth; his father went to, Ballard, Ky. remarried and had several children. Jehoida's mother remarried to, Thomas Culp, they had several children."
Jehoida and Sarah had 7 children, one named Wiley b. 1856, one named Samuel b 1842 By the time Sarah died ~1864 only 4 children were living.
Levina, Martin, Willis (Miles), Mary, Charlotte Jane, Samuel, Elvira and Wylie.
(this seems to be 8)
shortly after Jackson Purchase (19 Oct 1818) went to Kentucky
~1825 married 2nd wife "a Dutch girl" (=Sara Atherton?), raised a family of 7 children
This information comes from a memoir made by the son of Wiley and Lavina (named Jehoida). I think it is probably true - except for some of the info about the 2nd wife.

Lavinia
1810-18 born - Union county, Illinois
before 1828 - married Unknown Carter (mentioned in William's 1828 will)
died in Ballard Co, Ky
However - on the Sams GenForum site:
1.Lavina Sams, b. 1786, who married Jesse Carter on May 2, 1805 in Buncombe
Co., NC.
They moved to Rabun Co., GA about 1821 or 1822. (Bonnie Gilmer - message #178 - 29 May 1999)
2. born 12/15/1786 in Washington County, TN.
Post Script: Lavina Sams born 12/15/1786 in Washington County, TN, is the only child
listed with parents William (b 1755; d 1825) and Martha Edwards (d 6/1/1856). (Becki Sams - message 223/4 - 3 Aug 1999)
3.This woman's parentage was such a bone of contention that Crawford simply left
her out of the book.. This Lavina
could have been daughter of John Sams (b1749) who was definitely in TN in 1786
whereas no other one of the Wm Sams Sr progeny was and John moved to Buncombe Co
in time for a daughter to marry in 1805. (Conway Sams - message 568 - 14 Sep 200) I am not sure which Lavina the third person was talking about, since Crawford did include Lavina, daughter of William and Martha in his book - maybe he means the Lavina born in Washington Co, TN.
4. Jesse Carter(born-Jan.4,1784 Randolph Co. NC.,died Feb. 26, 1871-Rabun
Gap,GA)& Lavina
Sams(born-Dec. 15, 1786 TN, died June 1, 1856?, Rabun Gap, GA. They had 14
children. Among those 14 is Martha Carter-born Feb. 4,1806-Buncombe Co., NC, died
Little Rock, Ark.) My ancester is through her brother James Wiley Carter I. I have all the
