1873 - 1920
Pennsylvania/New York - California
Charles Scott caused us a lot of trouble. First of all, Dad thought his name was Walter (actually his father was Walter), and then when we finally started finding him on censuses, he never gave the same birthplace twice. Scott isn’t as uncommon a name as Bothwell, so it was miserable trying to sort things out - and we’re still not sure we’ve got it right.
Here is what we’ve found.
Charles Scott was born September 3, 1873 in Pennsylvania. I think it was Pennsylvania, because on the 1880 census, all his father’s children are said to have been born in Pennsylvania - but his death certificate (according to Kearney) says New York.

His father was born in Scotland (or England) and emigrated in 1847. His mother, Emily Brown, was from a family which had been in America for several generations (one of her ancestors had been a Hessian soldier, who deserted to the Americans). He (Charles’s father) was originally a blacksmith, but soon started working in the Pennsylvania oil fields, first as a driller, then as a tool dresser. They (Charles’s parents) lived in western Pennsylvania for the early part of their lives (they got married there) and it wasn’t until sometime between 1870 and 1880 that they moved to New York. So Charles could have been born in either state.
Unfortunately for us, there is a census missing, so the next we see of Charles, he is married and living in Los Angeles. According to his death certificate (in 1920), he had lived in California for 29 years, which would mean that he came out to California in 1891, when he was about 18.
He married Alice Louella Pattee on 17 Feb 1894; he was 20, she was 16 (according to their marriage license). Dad always called her Lulu, and so did her granddaughter-in-law, so I guess that was what she was called.
“He worked in the oil fields and they lived in 1900 in the Soledad Canyon area, which today is in the general area where Magic mountain amusement park is located. Ethel used to say she was born in the Chavez Ravine/ Elysian Park area of Los Angeles, which is the general area where Dodger Stadium is today.” from Kearney
By 1900, they had three children:
Walter Charles b. September 1894
Ethel Alice b. 2 April 1897
Elmer E b. 9 April 1900
And apparently they had another child who died between 1900 and 1910, because in the 1910 census, Lulu says she had 4 children, 3 living.

Charles’s brother and father (both named Walter) were also living in California for that census, so I don’t know but what the whole family moved out in 1891 when Charles did.
In 1910, they were living next to Lulu’s parents:
1910 California, Los Angeles, Burbank Twp - ED 278?- 4B-57
- can’t read street, looks like Monmouth - city directory says “n end of Defrees” - when you look it up in the Street/ED index is says “Defrees, see Sanborn” but it looks like Monmouth on the actual census (it’s a bad copy)

The Pattees had been in Burbank for the 1900 census, so it was a case of Lulu and Charles moving near them and not vice-versa. Lulu’s father (also named Charles) also worked in the oil fields.
Both Walter and Ethel married before the 1920 census, but for some odd reason, both of them show up with their parents (Ethel is listed again with her husband and child).

Charles died a few months after the census was taken, on April 4, 1920 (of a cerebral hemorrhage) in the Los Angeles Hospital. According to Kearney, he is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
Not long after that, Lulu married Winthrop Pattee - probably a cousin, although we have not yet proven the link - and went to live in Dinuba (Tulare County).

To next ancestor Ethel Scott (actually, I haven't put her page online - too close in time - if you are a relative, contact me and I will send it to you)
