Stanton Home Page

There was a Thomas Stanton of Connecticut, born 1661.
There was a John Stanton of Virginia, born in the 1600s in London.
There was Edwin Stanton, President Lincoln's Secretary of War.
There was Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

These are not my Stantons.

~*~*~*~

My Stantons came from Ireland at the height of the Great Hunger. They settled in Warrick
County, Indiana (and maybe some in Kentucky), and they did not particularly prosper.
My great great great grandfather died after only a few years, leaving his wife in a strange
country with 6 children, and very little money.
All the boys served in the Civil War. Two of them died.
They called themselves farmers at first.
Later, day laborers.
Later still, miners.
They were called poor white trash.
The ones I knew were hard-working, hard-drinking, funny people.
It was a joy to be in their company.

But it leaves out the narration.

Information Arranged Geographically

Indiana | Kentucky | Kentucky Counties | Louisville Stantons | North Carolina 1820 | Ireland
This is mostly census index info - some census transcriptions.
I have more info in certain Kentucky Counties - thus the Kentucky Counties page.
(Counties: Garrard, Jefferson, Jessamine, Russell, Shelby)
The North Carolina info is just something I found when I was looking for something else.

Military Information
Civil War Documents for Thomas, Patrick, Michael Stanton and Thomas Baker.

Miscellaneous
Ship Lists Containing Stantons
I have spent a LOT of time looking through ship lists, without much success. Here are some Stantons I found along the way. The list is NOT exhaustive - and as soon as I find my people, I'll stop instantly. Meanwhile, maybe your people are here, who knows?

The Search for Missing Friends
These are ads placed in the Boston Pilot by immigrants looking for . . . missing friends and relatives. It's marvelous.
